  • Google has launched its experimental AI app Dreambeans in India as its first market outside the U.S.
  • The app supports 13 local Indian languages including Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali.
  • Dreambeans automatically generates illustrated visual stories using connected Google services like Gmail and YouTube.
  • India was chosen due to high user overlap across Google services and strong local demand.

Google has introduced its experimental artificial intelligence application Dreambeans to India, marking its very first international market outside the United States. The tech giant aims to tap into the world's second-largest internet market by bringing personalized visual stories, drawn directly from users' digital activities, to a much wider audience.

Available on both Android and iOS platforms, Dreambeans expanded to India with built-in support for 13 local Indian languages alongside English, including Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali. This rollout takes place less than two months after Google made the application accessible to all eligible users aged 18 and older in the United States.

First introduced in June, Google's Dreambeans leverages information from linked Google services—such as Calendar, Gemini, Gmail, Google Photos, Search, and YouTube—to proactively craft tailored, illustrated narratives about individuals' everyday lives and interests without requiring manual prompts. While the app initially featured static AI-generated artwork, Google recently integrated its Veo video-generation model to animate images within selected stories.

Google product manager Gozde Oznur explained during a press briefing that the company selected India as the primary international destination for Dreambeans due to enthusiastic interest from Indian users and the widespread adoption of Google services across the nation. India stood out specifically for having a high overlap of active users across Gemini, Gmail, and Google Photos.

According to market intelligence estimates from Sensor Tower, Dreambeans recorded nearly 55,000 downloads in the U.S. since its initial June debut. Approximately 63% of those total downloads occurred in September when restrictions were lifted for adults 18 and older, though downloads subsequently declined by 84% month-over-month to roughly 5,500 in October.

Despite supporting numerous regional Indian languages, users are currently restricted to selecting only one language at a time for their generated stories. Oznur noted that while the app can pull data across Google services written in multiple languages, it cannot currently compile stories that seamlessly mix languages together, which could present a challenge in regions where code-mixing like Hinglish is prevalent.

Expanding proactive AI story-generation tools like Dreambeans into diverse global markets highlights how major technology firms are attempting to scale personalized consumer experiences. However, linguistic nuances such as code-switching between regional dialects and English remain a notable hurdle for current AI architectures trying to mirror natural human expression accurately.

Users maintain full control over their data, retaining the ability to choose which Google services link to Dreambeans, disconnect them at any point, and delete their app data directly. Oznur also confirmed that information wiped from underlying connected accounts is simultaneously purged from the Dreambeans personalization engine, and the app remains restricted to personal Gmail accounts rather than enterprise users.
