Designer Sree Krishna Pillarisetti has introduced Soft-pixel, a digital camera project that reimagines traditional disposable cameras by encasing them in a compostable shell made of mycelium, hemp, and PHA bioplastic. The design challenges conventional notions about which parts of an electronic device should be discarded after use.

This exploration follows Pillarisetti's Parsons thesis project, Soft-Drive, which wrapped memory cards and heat sinks in mycelium, hemp, and PLA. Soft-pixel advances this concept by substituting PLA with PHA, an important material upgrade because certain PHA formulations can biodegrade in home compost environments rather than requiring industrial facilities.

Reflecting its sustainable design approach, Soft-pixel earned the European Product Design Award for Best Eco-Design in 2026, alongside a Top Design win in the digital camera category. The enclosure's mycelium core is produced through a combination of biological growth and heat-press fabrication, yielding a lightweight and impact-absorbing casing.

Aesthetically, the translucent outer layer reveals the fibrous interior, giving the device an appearance resembling a granola bar. The rear features a square screen, four directional control buttons, and orange-labeled indicators for controls, speaker, and microphone, mirroring hobbyist development boards.

A "Cheese!" label marks the shutter button, while a microSD label denotes the local storage method, keeping photos stored on a physical card rather than uploading them to the cloud. Four visible screws holding the circuit board in place, accompanied by a precision driver, suggest the device is intended to be easily opened, echoing the utilitarian nature of disposable cameras.

Integrating biological materials like mycelium into consumer electronics represents a crucial shift in sustainable product design. As global electronic waste continues to mount, leveraging compostable biopolymers such as PHA instead of conventional petroleum-based plastics points toward a future where hardware can safely return to the earth rather than lingering in landfills for centuries.
