England's preparations have suffered a major blow as scrum-half Alex Mitchell has been officially ruled out of the entire Nations Championship series. The Northampton player is facing an extended spell on the sidelines after picking up his fourth hamstring injury through the course of 2026.
The setback occurred last Saturday when Mitchell was forced to limp off the pitch during the first half of his club's 28-14 victory over Gloucester. Subsequent medical evaluations confirmed that he will play no part in England's upcoming fixtures against Australia, Japan, and New Zealand this month.

The absence of the 29-year-old is a significant loss for the national team as they head into a demanding block of international fixtures. Mitchell's recurring injury issues mean he must now undergo a prolonged period of recovery for both club and country.
Recurring soft-tissue injuries in professional rugby highlight the extreme physical toll of modern club and international calendars. Experiencing four hamstring issues within a single calendar year points to a deeper biomechanical or load-management challenge that medical staff must address to protect the player's long-term career.
Meanwhile, fly-half Fin Smith's ongoing recovery from a calf problem is being carefully monitored by the coaching staff. Although his training involvement has been limited, Smith completed running drills upon arrival in camp, keeping England optimistic about his availability for Sunday's clash against the Wallabies.
Northampton winger Freeman commented on Mitchell's situation, noting that the enforced break will give his teammate an opportunity to thoroughly address the root causes of his physical struggles.
"It will definitely give him time to go after his rehab and get to the bottom of what is going on, find new solutions and ways to maximise his recovery."

In related squad news, 21-year-old Northampton scrum-half Archie McParland, who was named in the initial training squad, has also withdrawn due to a calf injury. However, hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie and flanker Tom Curry both participated in modified training sessions on Tuesday at England's Bagshot base and are expected to be fit for selection.
England head coach Steve Borthwick is scheduled to finalize and announce his matchday squad to face Australia on Friday.
