Design platform Canva has announced significant internal changes affecting 1,271 individuals, which accounts for 22 percent of its total staff. The decision was officially announced by co-founder and chief executive officer Melanie Perkins.
The restructuring initiative encompasses various adjustments, including altering job roles for certain workers and requiring specific personnel to relocate to centralized corporate hubs.
Perkins explained that after exploring a wide range of alternatives, she reached the difficult conclusion that minor adjustments would not suffice. To position the company for the upcoming decade, leadership determined the need to refound Canva by empowering smaller teams with decision-making freedom.
"For some people, this will mean changes to their roles or being asked to relocate to centralised hubs. Sadly, it will also mean saying goodbye to teammates and friends who have helped build Canva into what it is today."
Melanie PerkinsAlongside workforce reductions, Canva is consolidating its Product, Growth, and Platform teams into a single product organization to simplify operational layers and overlap. Furthermore, the company is establishing Sydney as the primary home base for a larger share of its product teams.

Canva's sweeping structural overhaul highlights a broader industry trend among tech companies striving to streamline operations and enhance organizational agility. By flattening hierarchies and reinforcing hybrid office attendance policies, the company aims to foster closer collaboration and renew its focus on core community priorities.
Beginning in January, Canva will also expect most hybrid employees to spend two to three days working from an office each week, depending on regional applicability. Departing team members will be provided with severance benefits including a minimum of six months of salary, twelve months of healthcare coverage, and dedicated career support resources.
