- James Talarico won the Texas Senate seat, flipping the state for Democrats for the first time since 1988.
- Elon Musk spent over $200 million in Texas supporting Republicans, failing to secure a victory.
- Total ad spending for the Senate race reached an unprecedented $573 million.
Elon Musk’s wall of money crumbled against a blue wave as James Talarico, the Democratic senator-elect, triumphed in the most expensive Senate election in history. More than $573 million was spent on advertisements between Talarico, his Republican opponent Ken Paxton, and aligned PACs, with a massive portion originating from Musk himself.
Musk reportedly spent over $445 million supporting Republicans in the midterms, establishing himself as the biggest donor in American history. A significant chunk of that capital targeted Texas, home to Tesla and SpaceX headquarters. Musk funneled more than $168 million into super PACs backing Paxton, while his own America PAC contributed $34.7 million locally out of $216 million total funds, bringing his total spending in the single state past the $200 million mark.
Yet, Musk’s millions failed to purchase an election outcome. Talarico beat Paxton by more than 12 points, becoming Texas’ first Democratic senator since 1988. Additionally, the governor's seat flipped as Democrat Gina Hinojosa ousted Republican incumbent Greg Abbott, finalizing the long-sought Democratic dream of a blue Texas despite the world’s wealthiest individual's interventions.
"Elon Musk is trying to buy this Senate seat. In all likelihood, if you’ve seen an attack ad on your TV screen, that was Elon. If you’ve gotten lies in your mailbox, that was Elon."

The midterms highlighted severe economic anxieties, with Talarico framing the race as a struggle between the ultrarich and everyday citizens. Amid inflation, trade tariffs, and ongoing conflicts, Musk’s financial backing of Abbott and Paxton served to spotlight growing wealth inequality across America.
U.S. midterm elections frequently function as referendums on current administrative policies. The unprecedented influx of private billionaire wealth via super PACs marks a pivotal shift in modern state-level politics. However, this electoral outcome demonstrates that widespread economic dissatisfaction and local voter sentiment can successfully outweigh extraordinary financial power.
Paxton’s official campaign received a meager $22.3 million in direct donations compared to Talarico’s $146 million war chest raised from voters. Musk’s financial lifeline flooded Texas homes with anti-Talarico advertisements, though these primarily targeted culture war issues and transgender individuals rather than core economic concerns.
