- Liverpool suffer a 3-2 defeat against Fenerbahce in the Champions League in Istanbul
- Fenerbahce, led by interim boss Dirk Kuyt, pull off a stunning comeback victory
- All three goals conceded by the visitors come from set-pieces
- The loss marks Liverpool's second defeat in four days across all competitions
When it comes to legendary comebacks in Istanbul, Liverpool share a rich history, but Andoni Iraola's side experienced the wrong end of that magic during their Champions League fixture at the Sukru Saracoglu stadium.
The visitors looked well on their way to an impressive away victory when Alexander Isak nodded in to put them ahead 2-1 in the 69th minute. However, a febrile atmosphere in the Kadikoy neighbourhood and a spirited display from the hosts under interim manager Dirk Kuyt turned the match on its head.
By losing 3-2, Iraola's team set an unwanted piece of club history: this was the latest Liverpool have ever gone ahead in a major European game only to go on and lose. All three of Fenerbahce's goals stemmed from defensive frailties during set-pieces, including Mason Greenwood's deflected free-kick and Archie Brown capitalizing on a loose ball.

"They are cheap goals. They are messy goals. Mistakes can cost you. For the last goal, it's a long throw and the first phase is controlled but after a very long ball, Muriqi wins it."

Iraola also noted that the deafening noise inside the stadium made it nearly impossible to communicate instructions to his players, which likely contributed to defensive misunderstandings during crucial moments.
This defeat highlights persistent defensive vulnerabilities for Liverpool under Iraola, particularly regarding set-piece organization and defensive transitions. While attacking improvements have been visible, recurring errors at the back continue to undermine their progress in top-tier European competition.
For Fenerbahce, interim boss Dirk Kuyt celebrated a historic night before handing over managerial duties to Emre Belozoglu. The former Liverpool forward revealed he urged his players to embrace a never-say-die attitude, inspiring the club's first win against an English opponent in 18 years.
