The online travel sector is witnessing a shifting landscape as Airbnb reported stellar financial results on Thursday, revealing a 19% revenue surge to $4.9 billion for the third quarter. This performance marks the company's fastest growth rate in over three years, allowing it to comfortably outpace major competitors in the industry.
This acceleration represents a stark turnaround from the previous year when CEO Brian Chesky expressed dissatisfaction with growth numbers during the Skift Global Forum. At that time, quarterly revenue grew by 9.7%, but the platform has steadily accelerated its expansion in nearly every subsequent quarter.

In comparison, Expedia Group recorded a 12% revenue increase during the third quarter, while Booking Holdings saw a 1% decline. Booking's drop was heavily influenced by a $1 billion accounting charge tied to a potential FTC settlement regarding business practices. Meanwhile, total nights and seats booked across homes, hotels, and experiences grew by 16% for Airbnb.
Company executives noted that the acceleration was not driven by a single isolated catalyst, but rather by robust demand spanning across all geographic regions. Continuous product roadmap enhancements—including search algorithms, merchandising tools, flexible payment options, and the Reserve Now, Pay Later feature—have successfully extended booking lead times.
"We delivered our fastest growth in over three years while outpacing our key rivals across major metrics."

Airbnb's ability to outpace established online travel giants like Booking Holdings and Expedia highlights the successful execution of its diversification strategy. By expanding beyond home-sharing into independent boutique hotels, car rentals, and integrating advanced artificial intelligence for customer operations, the company has created significant operational efficiencies and diversified revenue streams that strengthen its long-term market position.
Expansion efforts beyond traditional residential listings are also gaining noticeable traction. Airbnb now features boutique and independent hotels across 60 premier destinations, up from just 20 in May, with roughly 35% of hotel-first bookers returning later to reserve a home. Car rentals, powered by Expedia's CarTrawler, have quickly emerged as a top service. Furthermore, AI customer support operating in 50 languages now resolves roughly 40% of issues autonomously, reducing support costs per booking by 17% and pushing net income up 35% to $1.9 billion. Consequently, Airbnb raised its full-year revenue growth guidance to 16-18%.
