Andy Burnham has responded to questions regarding past connections between Labour Party figures and Russell Brand, stating that the public does not always know everything about individuals in public life.
More than a decade ago, prior to police investigations, certain figures within the Labour Party sought to court Brand's political support. In 2014, Burnham published a supportive message on social media while the comedian was facing intense criticism from news outlets.
During that period, Brand contributed regular opinion pieces to newspapers and participated in political discussion programmes, such as the BBC's Question Time. His left-wing and anti-establishment viewpoints had successfully cultivated a large following across digital platforms.

Ed Miliband, who led the Labour Party at the time, was interviewed by Brand ahead of the 2015 general election. Brand subsequently endorsed Labour, stating that Miliband had convinced him he would listen to ordinary people. Miliband, currently serving as foreign secretary, has previously stated his regret over the interview, while his spokesperson described Brand's actions as horrific crimes and offered profound sympathy to the victims.
Burnham's 2014 social media post, made while he was shadow health secretary, followed allegations regarding Brand's rental arrangements after reports claimed the comedian paid rent to a landlord located in a tax haven despite campaigning against tax avoidance. Brand had threatened legal action and stated he would donate the funds to Hillsborough disaster victims, a cause long championed by Burnham.
"All I can say is I had no idea of the full extent of what he was doing or what he went on to do."

This controversy highlights the complex relationship between mainstream politicians and cultural figures during an era when lad culture and internet presence heavily influenced political engagement. Aligning with high-profile personalities often carries long-term reputational risks when personal misconduct allegations eventually surface through judicial channels.
Following a four-week trial involving allegations from six women spanning from 1999 to 2009, Brand was convicted of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault, while being acquitted of two other rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault. He was denied bail and remanded in custody pending sentencing proceedings.
