- Crusoe continues to partner with Google on another data center project near Amarillo, Texas.
Crusoe, an eight-year-old, Denver-based data center developer, confirmed that it has sold an unfinished data center project located in southeastern Wyoming to Google. The transaction follows a period where Crusoe had previously tried and failed to secure Google as a customer for the original development.
Google took over the project after reportedly raising concerns regarding construction timelines and overall costs managed under Crusoe. The venture was initially announced last year in partnership with Blackstone-backed infrastructure firm Tallgrass, with long-term plans to scale capacity up to 10 gigawatts.
While Google did not disclose the acquisition price paid to Crusoe for the unfinished site, the tech giant announced plans to pour $17 billion into developing the facility. The deal underlines the complex hurdles independent data center developers face when delivering large-scale infrastructure within strict budgets and timelines, compounded by equipment shortages and local community pushback.

The acquisition highlights how crucial power availability and supply chain reliability have become in the artificial intelligence boom. As independent developers encounter financial and logistical bottlenecks, hyperscalers like Google are stepping in directly to secure the massive power capacity required to fuel next-generation AI workloads.
Despite taking over the Wyoming asset, Google and Crusoe maintain their business relationship. Crusoe is actively developing another data center for Google near Amarillo, Texas. Bloomberg initially reported the Wyoming site sale back in June, and the setback did not hinder Crusoe from securing a $3.9 billion funding round in September.
Crusoe's revenue model relies on leasing data center space to clients bringing their own GPUs, renting out proprietary GPUs, and selling inference compute power for AI models. Its roster of major tech clients includes Oracle, OpenAI, Microsoft, Meta, and trading firm Jane Street.
