The popular coding editor Cursor has introduced a groundbreaking capability with the release of Voice Chat with Agents on November 6, 2026, bringing a remarkably human touch to the development environment. Developers can now talk out loud in real time to their coding agent, which responds with brief spoken progress notes while working and a concise verbal answer upon completion, eliminating the need to read through lengthy text replies.
This feature functions seamlessly within the Agents Window, the IDE, on the web, and inside Cursor for iOS. Users can describe code modifications out loud, ask what the agent is currently doing, and listen to progress updates on the fly. While the agent runs, conversations can continue uninterrupted—allowing users to ask about diff changes, check on active runs, search through earlier messages, or switch between workers in a multi-worker Project.
Integrating voice as a primary interface highlights Cursor's strategic shift toward conversational programming. While this reduces window-switching friction during debugging, developers working in open-plan offices will need to weigh the technical convenience against the social etiquette of talking aloud to their code editors.

Under the hood, the speech capabilities are powered by Grok Voice, allowing users to select a preferred voice from settings—with Ara, Eve, Leo, Rex, and Sal offered as named options. Crucially, enabling Privacy Mode ensures zero data retention during voice chats, an essential consideration for handling sensitive client code. The underlying coding model remains whatever the user has selected, as Grok Voice handles speech processing exclusively rather than writing the code itself.
Accessing the feature requires a single click on the waveform button labeled Start voice chat, positioned right where the Send button normally appears when the agent is idle. For iOS users, a hands-free option is available by saying "Hey Siri, call Cursor," alongside Lock Screen and Dynamic Island controls arriving in iOS 1.16.0 to manage calls without unlocking the phone.
"This is not dictation. Dictation still just turns your speech into text in the chat input, while Voice chat is a two-way conversation where the agent answers out loud."
Cursor Docs
To avoid naming confusion, the developers emphasize that this feature is distinct from standard dictation—previously known as Voice Mode—which simply translates speech into text inside the chat input. Voice chat represents a true conversational paradigm where the agent actively speaks back.
