Jermain Defoe, the 43-year-old former England striker, has officially stepped down as manager of National League club Woking. He took over the role from Neal Ardley in March, spending a total of just 116 days at the club.
During this brief period, Defoe led the team in 6 league matches, securing 2 wins and guiding them to a 10th-place finish in the table last season. However, his resignation comes following his 9th game in total—a pre-season friendly where Woking suffered a 0-1 defeat to Braintree Town last Tuesday.
He took to his personal Instagram account to explain his decision, stating that circumstances made it impossible for him to continue, even though he felt proud of their work and believed the team was building something special together.
"Unfortunately, circumstances have ultimately made it impossible for me to continue in the position."

Before transitioning into coaching, Defoe enjoyed a long and distinguished professional playing career, scoring 305 goals in 763 appearances for prominent clubs such as West Ham, Tottenham, Portsmouth, and Sunderland before hanging up his boots in 2022. He previously served as a temporary member of the coaching staff at Rangers and worked in Spurs' academy before venturing out to seek a challenge as a full-time manager.
