Can Reddit fend off a new wave of AI SEO spam?
As AI search tools heavily cite Reddit discussions, brands and marketing bots are flooding the platform with stealth promotions.

- Reddit has become the most-cited domain by major AI tools including ChatGPT and Gemini.
- Brands and marketing agencies are deploying fake accounts and bots to manipulate AI recommendations.
- Subreddit moderators are actively blocking and filtering promotional spam to protect community authenticity.
The rise of AI-powered search has turned mentions on Reddit into high-value assets, forcing community moderators to crack down on brands attempting to exploit the platform. Earlier this year, a Reddit user inquired within a skincare-focused subreddit about a specific hypochlorous acid spray used for acne, prompting dozens of replies including one from a user named Primary-Taro4254 that seemed completely genuine at first glance.
Primary-Taro4254 stated they had not tried the brand mentioned in the original post but recommended a similar hypochlorous acid spray from Honeydew Labs, sharing personal details about how it calmed their redness and irritation. They even added specific product credentials, noting that Honeydew Labs uses a 0.02% hypochlorous acid concentration and is accepted by the National Eczema Association, which inspired confidence for sensitive skin.

However, examining Primary-Taro4254's profile revealed a pattern of repetitive praise for Honeydew Labs across completely unrelated threads and skincare subreddits, raising questions about whether the account belonged to a company employee, a marketing firm, or an automated spam bot. Soon, a member of r/SkincareAddiction—a popular community with over one million weekly visitors—spotted the activity and warned others about marketing bots, leading a moderator to take action against Primary-Taro4254 and implement automatic filtering for any future Honeydew Labs posts. Neither Honeydew Labs nor Primary-Taro4254 responded to requests for comment.
This trend highlights a massive shift in digital marketing strategies. While brands previously focused traditional SEO efforts on ranking high in search engine results pages, the modern battleground has shifted toward feeding large language models (LLMs) with favorable mentions. Because users associate Reddit with unfiltered, authentic human opinions, marketers view it as prime real estate to manipulate chatbot recommendations and secure brand-friendly answers in AI summaries.
It is difficult to overstate how central Reddit has become to the modern web experience over the past several years, evolving from a network of niche communities into arguably the most critical website on the internet. Users originally appended "reddit" to their search queries to bypass traditional SEO junk, prompting Google to prominently feature the site. Now, Reddit holds immense significance for marketers for an entirely different reason: AI chatbots love to cite it.
According to data compiled for The Verge by Semrush, an SEO company owned by Adobe, Reddit was the most-cited domain in May by AI engines including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google Gemini, and AI Mode, beating out news publishers, academic repositories, and Wikipedia. Semrush also discovered that Google is inserting AI Overviews much more frequently into commercial search queries compared to a year ago as shoppers research products and compare brands.
