Following the tremendous success and overwhelming response to its first budget laptop, recent reports indicate that Apple is moving forward with the development of an updated MacBook Neo, featuring major changes to its processor and memory, along with plans to introduce new color options.
This information aligns with a report by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, following up on an earlier report by analyst Tim Culpan, which stated that the new laptop will be powered by the A19 Pro chip—the same processor used in the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air—upgrading from the A18 Pro chip found in the current model.
This chipset upgrade allows the device to support higher memory capacity, with the new MacBook Neo expected to come with 12GB of RAM, an increase from the previous 8GB. However, ongoing component shortages may cause the launch price to be higher than the first generation, coupled with Apple's policy adjustments that raised prices across almost all hardware last month, along with the possibility that Apple might discontinue the entry-level 256GB storage model.
The shift to using the latest Pro-series chips in budget-friendly portable devices reflects Apple's strategy to attract a broader user base with higher performance, even as production costs and supply chain factors begin to put pressure on retail pricing. This change represents a major turning point for the portable computer market.
In addition to news about the budget laptop, Gurman also revealed that Apple plans to launch a new iMac featuring an OLED display following a hiatus since 2024, alongside developing a MacBook Pro powered by the M6 chip and an OLED touchscreen laptop, both expected to roll out in late 2024 or early 2025, as well as a redesigned entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M7 chip for the following year.
