  • Studio KRAFT solves tight schoolyard space in Budapest with a vertical garden concept.
  • Design shaped by a participatory process involving students and teachers.
  • Multi-level timber structures feature elevated platforms, climbing routes, and outdoor classrooms.
  • Climbing plants and greenery soften the paved courtyard and bring nature closer to students.

Urban density often leaves schoolyards constrained, but architects in Hungary have found an innovative way to multiply usable space. Studio KRAFT, a Budapest-based architecture practice, has introduced a series of vertical timber structures along the edges of a historic school site, transforming a hard paved courtyard into a dynamic multi-level playground.

The project, located at Bajza Elementary School, was developed through a participatory design process. Both students and teachers contributed their insights regarding daily courtyard usage, shaping a spatial strategy that accommodates various age groups and bridges active play with outdoor teaching. By building the new play elements above existing service areas, the design creates fresh areas to play and learn without reducing the open ground level.

The intervention features elevated platforms, climbing routes, sheltered corners, and green-covered play nooks. While the central area remains open for physical education, the new perimeter structures provide quieter zones dedicated to reading, conversation, relaxation, and informal learning. Features like a suspended rope tunnel, a slide, circular openings, and elevated walkways encourage continuous movement while maintaining visual connections across the courtyard.

This vertical playground approach highlights a growing architectural necessity in densely populated urban neighborhoods where horizontal expansion is impossible. By utilizing vertical dimensions and integrating natural elements into school architecture, designers can significantly enhance the daily well-being and developmental spaces of students without requiring a larger land footprint.

Plants play an active role in the playground's architecture. Climbing vines spread across the wooden framework, providing shade, vibrant colors, and seasonal transformations while softening the harsh urban surroundings. Furthermore, an enclosed outdoor classroom framed in timber and mesh panels extends learning beyond traditional indoor walls, giving the historic school a fresh identity.

The project was realized by architect Studio KRAFT, with community planning by Aeffect Communications, and photography captured by Yanep Lust Collective as part of designboom's PLAY chapter exploring pleasure in design.
