The Goa bench of the Bombay High Court in India has sentenced former Tehelka magazine editor Tarun Tejpal to 10 years in prison after convicting him of rape and sexual harassment against a former colleague. This legal development overturns the 2021 ruling by a sessions court in Goa that had previously acquitted him of all charges in a decade-old legal battle.
The criminal allegations date back to November 2013, when the survivor accused Tejpal of sexually assaulting her inside an elevator at a high-profile international conference hosted by Tehelka in Goa. The event was attended by high-profile figures, including Hollywood actor Robert De Niro.
Along with concurrent prison terms, the court ordered Tejpal to pay fines totaling more than 1 million rupees ($10,500; £7,800). The accusations against one of India's most prominent editors had made national headlines in 2013, arriving on the heels of massive nationwide protests over sexual violence following the 2012 Delhi gang rape and murder.
