- The Trump administration has paid a cumulative $3.93 billion to terminate 12 offshore wind leases.
- German energy firm RWE received $1.2 billion to scrap wind projects off California, Louisiana, and New York.
- RWE will redirect $900 million to acquire a stake in a Louisiana liquefied natural gas export terminal.
- The cancelled New York wind farm was projected to generate over 3 gigawatts of electricity.
The U.S. administration under Donald Trump has agreed to pay another $1.2 billion to German utility giant RWE to cancel an offshore wind lease, marking the latest move in reshaping the nation's energy landscape.
According to the energy company's announcement, the abandoned wind farms were originally slated for construction off the coasts of California, Louisiana, and New York. Instead of proceeding with the wind projects, RWE will allocate $900 million to purchase a small equity stake in a liquid natural gas export terminal located in Louisiana.
Data from Heatmap News indicates that the cancelled wind installation in New York alone would have produced over 3 gigawatts of power. Meanwhile, the remaining $300 million from the payout will fund the purchase of natural gas turbines intended to power 15 peaking power plants distributed across the United States.

Peaking power plants remain among the priciest and most environmentally damaging natural gas facilities to operate. Timelines for their completion remain uncertain due to an existing industry backlog for new turbines that extends well into the early 2030s.
The allocation of nearly $4 billion in public funds to dismantle offshore wind agreements highlights a major shift toward fossil fuel infrastructure. While abandoning renewable projects incurs massive immediate expenses, it underscores the current administration's strong preference for natural gas and traditional peaking power solutions.
Despite scaling back in the United States, RWE maintains its broader offshore wind strategy elsewhere, recently securing 6.9 gigawatts of capacity during a recent auction held in the UK.
With this latest transaction, the Trump administration has now disbursed a total of $3.93 billion across 12 separate leases that developers have been persuaded to abandon.
