Nestled in a forested area on the island of Zealand in Denmark, a pitched oak shingle roof slopes down around a 35-square-meter vacation home designed to accommodate up to six people. Named EcoNeo and developed by SAGA Space Architects, the interior layout features a shared living space, two loft levels for sleeping, and a sauna embedded on the ground floor. Although its size is comparable to a studio apartment, the exterior form echoes the vibe of a traditional cabin, complete with deep eaves and large windows connecting to a garden terrace.
Previously, SAGA has designed underwater habitats and simulated space stations, and the spatial constraints from those environments have been brought into the Earth-bound EcoNeo project. The exterior is wrapped in oak to blend naturally with the surroundings and weather over time, while the interior building services are neatly concealed within a warm timber structure.
The ground-floor spatial arrangement consists of a kitchen and bathroom wrapping around the central living area, which can comfortably host up to ten people. Built-in storage shelves line the perimeter to keep the center open and clear. Above, two lofts serve as the primary sleeping zones for a family of four. Large openings and windows flood the home with natural light and outdoor views, while a mechanically controlled skylight channels illumination straight into the heart of the building.
