Facebook Launches Video Selfie Verification System, Offering Free White Checkmarks

Facebook platform users may notice a new verification symbol on profiles, designed to show that an account is owned by a real person. The platform is rolling out a free verification feature that allows users to upload a short video selfie to receive a white checkmark on their profile, as well as in Marketplace, Dating, and Groups. However, upon launch, this symbol does not yet appear on posts in the Feed, though Facebook has revealed it will add this capability in the future.

This new verification system is entirely different from Meta Verified, a monthly subscription service for receiving a blue checkmark on Facebook and Instagram accounts. The paid service involves Meta verifying users by checking government-issued IDs, and in some cases, may also include a video selfie.

Regarding the eligibility requirements for Facebook Verified, users must be at least 18 years old, and their account must be in good standing with the platform's Community Standards. This feature will be gradually rolled out in select markets before expanding globally. Once users gain access to the feature, they must record a short video selfie, which Facebook's system will compare against their existing profile photo using facial recognition technology. If the check passes, the user will immediately receive a white checkmark on their profile. Note that this verification service is not yet available for Pages or accounts in Professional Mode.
