More than 14 months after departing Liverpool for the Spanish capital, Trent Alexander-Arnold is gearing up for his second season with Real Madrid. The 27-year-old right-back will now answer to his third manager at the club in Jose Mourinho.
When Los Blancos acquired him by releasing him from his contract a month early on June 1, 2025, for a reported fee of 10 million euros or 8.4 million pounds, the club envisioned him as one of the most versatile defenders globally, capable of dictating play through his passing range, crossing ability, and composure under pressure.

However, his eagerly anticipated debut season fell short of lofty expectations as two distinct injuries derailed his momentum. A hamstring setback in September sidelined him for 7 weeks, while a thigh issue in December kept him out of action for another 2 months, denying him the regular playing time needed to build rhythm and rapport with supporters.
Ultimately, he featured in 35 of Real Madrid's 62 matches across all competitions, starting 27 times while sharing right-back duties with club legend Dani Carvajal. While questions regarding his defensive capabilities persisted much like they did during his Anfield tenure, his exceptional ball-playing qualities continued to shine, particularly toward the end of the campaign under Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa.
"I will take a good break and put the work in over the summer. I promise we will bring trophies back to this amazing club next season."
Trent Alexander-Arnold
The arrival of Jose Mourinho in June 2025 represents a critical tactical turning point for Alexander-Arnold. Known for defensive discipline and tactical adaptability, Mourinho values full-backs who can drift into central midfield areas during build-up play. This tactical inclination aligns perfectly with the Englishman's natural playmaking strengths, potentially unlocking his full offensive potential within the Madrid setup.
Competition remains fierce at the Santiago Bernabeu. Although Carvajal departed upon the expiration of his contract, Real Madrid secured Netherlands international Denzel Dumfries on a four-year deal from Inter Milan. Interestingly, during a pre-season friendly 2-2 draw with Fiorentina, Mourinho deployed both players simultaneously, utilizing Alexander-Arnold at right-back while Dumfries operated further up the flank.
For Alexander-Arnold, the upcoming campaign offers a vital platform to solidify his status as a pillar of the squad and reclaim his place in Thomas Tuchel's England national team plans.
