At least 13 people have lost their lives following a Ukrainian drone strike targeting the Russian republic of Tatarstan, according to official statements.
Russian authorities reported that one child was among those killed, while 75 additional individuals sustained injuries. This marks one of the deadliest single attacks inside Russia since Moscow initiated its full-scale military campaign in Ukraine.
The city of Nizhnekamsk, where the strike occurred, sits more than 1,100 kilometres or 680 miles away from the Ukrainian border. The assault unfolded over the course of several hours through the night and into the morning.

Ukraine's Armed Forces confirmed that the Tanevo oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk was successfully struck. Meanwhile, Ukrainian defense technology manufacturer FirePoint stated that its FP-1 drones were deployed in the operation.
Unverified footage shared across social media platforms captured massive plumes of smoke and towering flames billowing into the daytime sky, accompanied by the howling sound of air raid sirens.

Kyiv's ability to successfully execute long-range strikes deep into Russian territory, such as the Tatarstan region over 1,100 kilometres away, highlights the advancing capabilities of its unmanned aerial vehicle technology. By consistently targeting energy infrastructure and oil facilities that fund and supply Russia's military operations, Ukraine aims to disrupt logistical networks far beyond the active front lines, challenging Moscow's internal air defense preparedness.
Rustam Minnikhanov, the head of Tatarstan, confirmed the attack and expressed his condolences to the grieving families, while a formal period of mourning has been declared in the region.
Ukrainian defense forces had previously targeted oil refineries in Nizhnekamsk back on June 12. Concurrently, Moscow claimed that its air defense systems intercepted more than 450 Ukrainian drones overnight.
