  • OpenAI introduces GPT-5.6-Cyber as a specialized cybersecurity AI model
  • Access is divided into Daybreak Blue and Daybreak Red tiers for approved defenders
  • Achieved a 95.0% completion rate on internal advanced cybersecurity evaluations
  • Identified critical V8 vulnerabilities in Chrome, assigned identifier CVE-2026-15903

Cybersecurity is entering a new phase as security teams face increasingly complex problems and fast-moving threats. To help defenders respond more effectively, OpenAI has introduced GPT-5.6-Cyber, a specialized model designed specifically for advanced cybersecurity tasks.

The model supports authorized security research, vulnerability discovery, and other defensive workflows. The Daybreak program demonstrates how specialized AI tools can improve modern cybersecurity by working alongside human security experts.

Built upon GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-5.6-Cyber is trained to enhance performance on specialized cybersecurity tasks such as finding zero-day vulnerabilities and developing exploit chains, while reducing refusals for certain higher-risk, dual-use cyber tasks. Daybreak features two access tiers: Daybreak Blue provides approved defenders with frontier general-purpose models like GPT-5.6 Sol with tailored safeguards, while Daybreak Red provides purpose-trained cybersecurity models for authorized vulnerability research, exploit validation, and security testing.

This approach reflects a significant shift toward security tools designed for professional cybersecurity environments rather than unrestricted public use. The primary goal is to help trusted defenders investigate vulnerabilities, analyze potential threats, and respond to security incidents more effectively under strict access controls.

Restricting high-level security AI models through the Daybreak program and requiring hardware security keys starting September 1, 2026, highlights OpenAI's commitment to preventing misuse. At the same time, it underscores the growing role of AI in analyzing massive codebases that exceed human capacity in an era driven by high-speed threats.

According to OpenAI's internal evaluations, the model achieved a 95.0% completion rate on the Advanced Cybersecurity Completion Rate evaluation, outperforming GPT-5.6-Cyber at 57.3%. Furthermore, researchers used the model to investigate Chrome's V8 JavaScript engine, uncovering two new vulnerabilities that could corrupt memory and escape the V8 heap sandbox. Google confirmed the findings, fixed the issues, and assigned identifier CVE-2026-15903.

Beyond V8, OpenAI noted that GPT-5.6-Cyber helped identify at least five vulnerabilities in a popular mobile operating system, three critical vulnerabilities in a popular database, and over 400 vulnerabilities that could lead to privilege escalation in a popular operating-system kernel. OpenAI assessed the model's cybersecurity capability as High under its Preparedness Framework, remaining below the Critical threshold, and clarified that the model was not involved in the separate Hugging Face security incident.
