Memphis Depay has accused Corinthians of unacceptable behavior and breaching an agreement after the Brazilian club decided against renewing his contract. The 32-year-old forward originally joined the outfit on a two-year deal back in 2024, but he now finds himself out of contract after a previously arranged extension was abruptly pulled off the table.
Taking to social media, the former Manchester United and Barcelona attacker stated that the renewal had been explicitly cleared by the president as well as the sporting, legal, and financial departments, only for certain individuals to break that commitment. He added that while he always respected the club, he is now forced to react strongly to protect his interests.

During his stint in South America, the Netherlands' all-time leading goalscorer netted 20 goals in 79 appearances, helping the team secure the Copa do Brasil in 2025 and the Supercopa do Brasil in 2026. Meanwhile, the Sao Paulo-based club, currently sitting seventh in Brazil's Serie A, admitted that declining to extend the veteran's stay was a tough choice driven strictly by financial futures.
"This renewal was explicitly agreed upon by the president as well as the sporting, legal and financial department. Some people decided however to breach this engagement."

This high-profile dispute sheds light on the delicate financial balancing acts occurring within South American football clubs. Managing high-wage international players often creates friction when macroeconomic realities clash with sporting ambitions, forcing boards to make unpopular cuts to safeguard the institution's long-term financial health.
Corinthians announced that club president Osmar Stabile will address the public in the coming days regarding the controversial roster decision. On the international stage, Depay recently featured for the Netherlands at the 2026 World Cup, where the squad exited the tournament in the round of 32.
