- DES Minister clarifies school shooting suspect browsed standard websites and YouTube, not Dark Web.
- Ministry collaborates with Apple and Meta to enhance child protection policies.
- Authorities reach out to gaming associations to flag accounts showing unusual interest in firearms.
Following the tragic school shooting incident at Debsirin Nonthaburi School, initial media reports suggested the student involved had accessed dark web platforms containing violent murder content. However, Digital Economy and Society (DES) Minister Chaiwut Thanakhamanusorn has clarified that police investigations revealed a completely different picture of the suspect's online activity.
Mr. Chaiwut stated that checks conducted by law enforcement officers showed the student merely visited YouTube and basic educational documentary websites. These platforms contained standard, everyday content rather than the extreme violence many had imagined, meaning such regular informational sites are not something the government intends to censor or block.
Rapidly debunking misinformation about dark web involvement helps prevent public panic and misdirected panic over standard internet usage. By focusing the narrative on behavioral oversight and platform accountability rather than blanket censorship, policymakers can address root issues of youth safety more effectively in the digital age.
Regarding preventative measures, the Minister noted that the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has previously engaged with major tech firms regarding protection policies. Discussions are underway with Apple to adjust terms and modify child protection policy modes, while talks with other digital platforms continue to advance safety standards.

Furthermore, after discovering the suspect maintained a gaming account featuring a simulated gun shop, the ministry contacted the gaming association. Rather than seeking a ban, the objective is to establish cooperation allowing gaming companies to flag high-risk user profiles or accounts displaying specialized interest in firearms, enabling state agencies to intervene proactively before incidents occur.
