- Implemented a practical miniature version of the Tulu 3 post-training stack
- Improved instruction-following through supervised fine-tuning (SFT)
- Refined response preferences using length-normalized DPO
- Optimized verified task rewards utilizing GRPO and LoRA
This technical walkthrough covers the implementation of a practical miniature version of the Tulu 3 post-training stack to observe how each training stage alters model performance on verifier-scored mathematical reasoning tasks. The process began by establishing a baseline, improving instruction-following via supervised fine-tuning, and refining response preferences using length-normalized DPO.
Further optimization was achieved by utilizing group-relative advantages alongside the repository’s GRPO loss implementation. Additionally, LoRA was deployed to maintain an accessible reference policy, apply response masking and KL regularization during reinforcement learning, compare accuracy across all stages, and export a merged checkpoint for subsequent inference or evaluation.

Post-training techniques like SFT, DPO, and GRPO are critical components that transform raw language models into reliable, instruction-following AI assistants capable of advanced reasoning. Creating a miniature, accessible version of such complex stacks allows researchers and developers to experiment and understand advanced LLM alignment without requiring massive enterprise compute clusters.
