Fenway Sports Group has reached a landmark agreement to sell approximately one-third of Liverpool Football Club to a high-profile consortium featuring billionaire Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. This transaction marks the e-commerce pioneer's very first venture into professional sports ownership, although he will not take up a seat on the club's board of directors.
The investing group is spearheaded by British-Indian millionaire businessman Amit Bhatia, who previously served as a director and co-owner of Queens Park Rangers for nearly two decades. The consortium also includes Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. Bhatia is slated to become Liverpool's vice-chairman upon regulatory approval, while Bryan Baum—founder of venture capital firm K5 Sports, through which Bezos is channeling his investment—will join the Anfield board alongside Saverin's wife, Elaine.

According to reports from BBC Sport, the multi-million-pound transaction will leave the club's transfer window approach completely unchanged, with no new or separate player acquisition budget tied to the injection of capital. FSG will continue to hold its majority stake and direct all operational decisions at the club. Financial analysts estimate that the deal values the entire organization at somewhere between £5bn and £6bn.
Mike Gordon, president of FSG, noted that Liverpool has consistently operated by looking past individual seasons and prioritizing the long-term health of the institution. He emphasized that this disciplined philosophy continues to attract global business leaders and respected investors. Amit Bhatia echoed these sentiments, stating that the entire group is exceptionally proud to partner with such a renowned institution.
"FSG continues to retain majority ownership and operational control of Liverpool."

When FSG originally acquired Liverpool for £300 million back in 2010, the club was described by executives as being on the verge of bankruptcy. Factoring in subsequent intra-group loans, the ownership group's total initial outlay reached roughly £518 million. By parting with a 30% slice of the club for a sum that yields over £1.5 billion, FSG has realized a return exceeding five times their initial investment amidst stadium redevelopment, a new training ground, and major silverware.
This high-profile transaction highlights a broader trend in elite European football where legendary sports brands are increasingly intertwined with global technology titans and international venture capital networks. By leveraging record revenues—such as the £703 million generated in the 2024-25 financial year—FSG has successfully transformed Liverpool into a premier global business asset while maintaining strict operational command over the club's future direction.
While Bezos has previously been linked to potential acquisitions of major American sports franchises like the Seattle Seahawks and the Washington Commanders, this agreement secures the billionaire a prized asset in European football. It pairs one of the world's wealthiest individuals with one of the most widely supported global sports brands in history.
