- Partnership generates about 500 daily bookings across five markets
- CarTrawler controls display and monetizes via wholesale rates and commissions
- Customer data flows to CarTrawler even upon a simple link click
- Pending Expedia acquisition raises conflict-of-interest questions
One month after the initial report regarding Airbnb joining forces with Ireland-based CarTrawler for car rental services, fresh details have emerged from a source familiar with the operation detailing how the partnership functions behind the scenes.
Airbnb's car rental offerings are hosted entirely through CarTrawler, which maintains direct ties with car rental suppliers. This setup mirrors the early operational strategy once utilized by Uber before the ride-hailing giant established its own direct vendor relationships to maximize profitability by bypassing intermediaries.

According to reports, the partnership is currently generating roughly 500 bookings per day spanning five live markets, which include the United States, France, Italy, Spain, and Australia. Consumer demand within these regions has notably tilted toward lower-end suppliers such as Budget.
CarTrawler retains full control over the top-of-page display options. The intermediary monetizes the arrangement through marked-up wholesale rates, split retail commissions, and volume-based supplier incentives that favor specific vendors.
Choosing an intermediary over building native direct supplier integrations allows travel platforms to roll out new product categories rapidly. However, handing over deep customer behavioral data to a third party introduces long-term strategic vulnerabilities regarding who truly owns the customer relationship.
The most contentious aspect centers around data-sharing practices. Extensive customer details—including home location, name, age, country of residence, travel dates, party size, and loyalty data—flow directly to CarTrawler even when customers merely click a car rental link without completing a reservation.
These strategic concerns are further magnified by Expedia's pending acquisition of CarTrawler, considering that Expedia competes directly against Airbnb. Although Expedia maintains strict data firewalls to protect partner information, Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky has publicly expressed strong confidence in the ongoing collaboration.
