MACH Architects Designs Timber Bench Shaped Like a Cat

Designed by MACH Architects Beijing for ceramic artists, this innovative bench reimagines the traditional potter's wedging stand as a compact piece of furniture. It successfully combines ergonomic considerations with familiar woodworking techniques. Since these traditional stands typically feature a forward-leaning slope to ease clay wedging, their silhouette bears a striking resemblance to a stretching cat, inspiring the designers to release the feline form hidden within.

Starting with a conventional bench framework, the design team in Beijing narrowed the width and carefully calibrated the incline to optimize ergonomic comfort. Crafted entirely from 24mm timber panels, the furniture piece balances the ease of mass production with a modern, lightweight aesthetic. To ensure long-lasting stability while honoring classic woodworking heritage, the makers incorporated traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery throughout the structure.

Additional functional details enhance the compact design. The curved 'belly' section houses a practical integrated drawer for extra storage, while the rotating head acts as a clever mechanical lock, reinforcing the continuous cat-like silhouette from every viewing angle.
