- Grounded secured $5 million in funding to expand van customization
- The startup opened a new 50,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Detroit
- Production at the new facility officially kicks off in August 2026
- The modular design supports both electric and combustion-powered fleets
Grounded, a Detroit-based startup founded in 2022, has demonstrated notable operational flexibility by securing $5 million in funding. The fresh capital is earmarked for scaling its core modular design business and expanding its van customization services for commercial fleets.
Alongside the funding announcement, the company has opened a brand-new 50,000-square-foot manufacturing facility located in Detroit. This dedicated plant will allow the startup to implement a vehicle-agnostic approach, making it capable of tailoring various fleet vehicles regardless of whether they run on electricity or internal combustion engines.
Adopting a vehicle-agnostic manufacturing model is a strategic pivot for modern transportation startups. By building modular designs that fit multiple chassis types, Grounded can navigate the uncertain transition period between traditional fossil-fuel commercial vehicles and emerging electric fleets without being tied to a single automotive supplier.

This strategic shift builds upon previous operational transitions. Shapiro noted earlier that the startup previously worked through remaining available inventory from BrightDrop while executing its pivot toward newer vehicle models, which includes leveraging electric and hybrid options sourced from fellow startup Harbinger.
According to the company, production inside the newly established Detroit facility is scheduled to begin this month, with manufacturing capacity slated to ramp up significantly heading into next year.
