Laplae District in Uttaradit province is an ancient settlement nestled within complex mountain ranges and lush forests. Historically, sunlight interacting with the dense canopy and mist made it difficult for outsiders to navigate, causing travelers to easily lose their way. This gave origin to the name "Laplae," which translates to disappearing from sight.
Beyond its mysterious geographical features, local folklore depicts Laplae as a hidden town inhabited solely by women who lived virtuous lives and adhered strictly to truthfulness. The traditional prohibition against lying served as a moral guideline, weaving honesty and the Five Precepts into the community's way of life to foster harmony and mutual trust.
Thai folklore frequently employs moral allegories and cautionary tales to reinforce societal norms. In the legend of Laplae, tying marital trust to absolute truthfulness reflects traditional cultural values that view keeping one's word as essential for maintaining social cohesion within close-knit ancient communities.
The story unfolds when a man from Thung wandered into the forest and stumbled upon Laplae. He fell in love with a local woman and they started a family together under one critical condition: the husband must never tell a lie. He agreed, made the promise, and the couple eventually had a child.

One day while the wife was out gathering vegetables and firewood, their baby began crying uncontrollably from hunger. To calm the child, the father uttered, "Mother has returned." Although it was merely a white lie to quiet the baby, upon learning of the incident, the wife insisted that her husband leave Laplae because he had broken his sacred promise.
Before parting, the woman handed him a shoulder bag with strict instructions not to open it along the journey. Overcome by curiosity, the man disobeyed and opened the bag, discovering only turmeric rhizomes inside. He discarded most of them, keeping only a single piece to take home.
