Thailand Mobilizes Jetskis and Helicopters for Nan Floods

The Thai Ministry of Interior has intensified flood rescue operations in Nan province following severe flash floods and torrential rainfall. Through a teleconference involving district and provincial officials, orders were issued to swiftly evacuate vulnerable groups from high-risk zones and actively monitor social media channels where citizens post requests for emergency assistance, ensuring help reaches them without delay.
To bolster rescue efforts on the ground, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) and lower northern regional units were instructed to urgently dispatch all available jetskis and flat-bottom boats to Nan province. A KA32 helicopter was also deployed on standby. Furthermore, highway authorities, local police, and volunteers were mobilized to set up pilot vehicles and deliver essential equipment, drinking water production units, and field kitchens to the affected areas.
Officials reported that the severe weather and flash floods have heavily impacted three districts in Nan: Pua, Mae Charim, and Santi Suk. Pua district alone suffered damages across 9 sub-districts and 35 villages, affecting around 16,000 residents from 8,000 households. Five roads were cut off, and 10 temporary evacuation centers were established, including local administrative offices and schools. Military personnel, DDPM units, and rescue foundations have spread across the disaster zones, with roughly 70 to 80 personnel deployed to Ban Rong to evacuate stranded residents within hours.

"Tomorrow the water will flow to Tha Wang Pha district and Mueang Nan district, and on August 21 it will flow to Wiang Sa district. During August 20-21, Mueang Nan and Wiang Sa must remain on highest alert, and local municipalities have already warned residents to move belongings to higher ground."

In addition, the Jetski Association of Thailand dispatched eight jetskis led by team commander Ple Nakorn, traveling from Bangkok to join the rescue operations. The Ministry of Interior emphasized that evacuees in temporary shelters must be provided with comfortable living conditions and basic utilities, reinforcing the strict directive that there must be zero fatalities resulting from this severe flooding disaster.
Flood management in northern Thailand frequently presents severe logistical challenges due to the mountainous terrain and numerous river basins that accelerate runoff from heavy downpours. Utilizing a multi-modal rescue strategy combining tactical watercraft like jetskis with aerial support from helicopters is critical for reaching isolated communities and evacuating stranded residents where standard ground vehicles cannot navigate.
