Nan Flood Crisis: Officials Inspect N.1 Station to Boost Dikes

The flood crisis in Thailand's Nan province remains critical following continuous heavy to very heavy rainfall. Pua district recorded an alarming accumulated rainfall of 277.6 millimeters over a 24-hour period, triggering flash floods and overflow from the Nan, Pua, Yang, and Khwang rivers into residential zones and agricultural areas.
The severe flooding has currently impacted four districts, namely Pua, Phu Phai, Santi Suk, and Tha Wang Pha, with floodwaters reaching depths between 0.50 and 1.20 meters and causing widespread hardship for local residents.

At around 20:00, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Yossanan Wongsuwan, acting as incident commander, alongside Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Suriya Juangroongruangkit and Deputy Minister of Interior Jaseht Thaised, arrived at the N.1 water measurement station at the Northern Development Bridge in Mueang Nan district.
The delegation met with Royal Irrigation Department Director-General Wittaya Kaewmee, Nan Governor Chainarong Vongyai, and local officials. Minister Suriya instructed the Irrigation Department to monitor water levels around the clock and deployed a 14-inch water pump in Mueang Nan alongside three 8-inch pumps in Wiang Sa to accelerate drainage.

At the N.1 station, the Nan River water level was recorded at 7.62 mMSL, sitting 0.88 meters below the reinforced riverbank but continuing to rise. Authorities issued warnings for potential overflow in Phu Phai and Mueang districts between 19:00 and 21:00, with projections that floodwaters could breach the Mueang district reinforced banks by up to 0.60 meters during the early hours of August 20.
Implementing a Single Command center is crucial during natural disasters as it streamlines multi-agency communication between irrigation, disaster mitigation, and local administrative bodies, ensuring rapid execution when every minute counts for public safety.

Yossanan noted that Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul emphasized round-the-clock monitoring by all cabinet members and local units. During the media briefing, emergency Cell Broadcast alerts were dispatched to mobile phones in high-risk zones. Actor and volunteer Nakorn Silachai also joined the ground operation to support rescue and relief efforts.
