The online gaming community was sent into a frenzy after two videos containing gameplay footage and a map of the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI were published on the internet. A user going by the name Cyberleek has claimed responsibility for the leak, which surfaced just days before Rockstar Games is scheduled to release a preview of the game on Netflix on August 27. The leak has given eager fans an unprecedented look at mechanics and details previously kept under wraps.
The first video features the game's protagonist, Jason, playing basketball in front of a waterfront house, while another clip shows a confrontation with a delivery person escalating into violence followed by a police chase. Additionally, an image purporting to be the game's full map has circulated, covering the state of Leonida, which draws inspiration from Florida. The map reportedly displays both main characters simultaneously, along with a racing track and a small runway near the Keys area that some speculate could serve as a military base.
While Rockstar Games has not yet confirmed the authenticity of the leaked content, prominent gaming outlet PC Gamer noted that the videos appear realistic. Closer examination revealed previously unconfirmed footage, such as a 6-star police arrest system that tracks officers' awareness of suspects' clothing, appearance, and vehicles. It also features a melee stamina meter compared by multiple outlets to Red Dead Redemption 2. For the first time in the series, vehicle systems include fuel levels and engine conditions, while the basketball minigame boosts the Focus attribute.
High-profile video game leaks frequently disrupt marketing schedules and commercial confidentiality, posing significant challenges for developers. In an era where artificial intelligence can easily generate convincing fake media, consumers and media outlets must exercise extreme caution to filter information accurately. Such incidents often pressure development teams to accelerate official communications or adjust their rollout strategies to regain control of public narrative.
However, the latest leak has also opened the door for misinformation. Gaming outlet Kotaku reported that AI-generated videos and images have spread mixed in with the genuine footage, alongside old clips from the 2022 security breach being recirculated under new labels. This makes it difficult for players to distinguish authentic leaks from fakes. Kotaku added that if this latest round of footage is authentic, it appears to originate from a build significantly further along in development than the 2022 leaks.
Cyberleek stated that the data release is tied to broader protests concerning digital game pre-orders, single-player add-on content the group claims is fake, Sony's cancellation of physical game discs, and demands for an offline backup mode. The group reportedly published a manifesto with several demands directed at Rockstar and other publishers, threatening further leaks if ignored. Within a day, a second batch of data emerged showing taser usage, cutscenes, and the promotion of an unrelated cryptocurrency. GTA 6 is officially scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
