French police tactics are demonstrating higher effectiveness in preventing small rubber boats attempting to cross the English Channel from reaching British shores, according to the UK Home Office. Officials credited French authorities with successfully intercepting 185 potential crossings involving 4,300 migrants across four distinct weeks this summer, alongside stopping 12 boats at sea utilizing newly introduced operational techniques.
Footage released by French law enforcement shows officers driving jeeps across a beach to intercept a launch before it reaches open water. Once the vessel is abandoned, an officer disables it by slicing it lengthwise with a knife, while migrants can be seen throwing objects at the officers, prompting one officer to deploy pepper spray.

Although Channel crossings are down by roughly 40% relative to the previous year, thousands of unauthorized migrants continue arriving, with 250 individuals documented arriving on Monday. In late July, a record number of 165 migrants reached the UK aboard a single mega-dinghy estimated to be 13 meters or 42 feet long—equivalent to a standard bus—which was photographed being towed into Dover by the Border Security Command on July 23.
The UK-France Border Security agreement, struck in April under the Starmer administration, represents a strategic shift by dedicating 501 million pounds over three years to strengthen northern French operations and 161 million pounds for novel approaches. This marks a departure from previous practices where French authorities allowed most dinghies to launch due to deep-water interception risks.
Charlie Eastaugh, director of maritime and small boats at the Border Security Command, told the BBC at the Western Jetfoil facility in Dover that last Thursday alone, French authorities prevented all three attempted crossings, including two at sea and one on land. Official data shows that between January 1 and August 19, 2026, a total of 15,897 people crossed the English Channel in small boats, marking a 43% decrease from the preceding year.
