  • Thailand ranks as Canva's 6th largest global market with over 7 million monthly active users from 30 million accounts.
  • The Thai government proposed establishing a regional office and an AI-Design research center during talks in Sydney.
  • Targets include assisting 40,000 Thai SMEs and expanding Canva Creators to 1,000 designers by 2028.
  • Canva Education access in schools aims to double from 3.3 million to 6.6 million users by 2028.

Canva adoption in Thailand has surged significantly, accumulating over 30 million registered accounts and maintaining approximately 7 million monthly active users. This impressive engagement places Thailand as the 6th largest market globally for the Australian digital design platform. Consequently, the Thai government's primary objective has shifted from merely increasing user numbers to converting this massive digital base into tangible economic value and income for Thai citizens.

Ekniti Nitithanprapas, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, revealed the outcomes of the Prime Minister's official mission to the Commonwealth of Australia, highlighting Canva as a key strategic partner. The government formally invited the company to consider establishing a regional office and a dedicated AI-Design research center in Thailand, setting clear numerical targets for SMEs, professional designers, and the education sector to integrate them into the global digital economy.

Globally, Canva serves over 265 million monthly active users across more than 190 countries and caters to 475 Fortune 500 companies. The company closed fiscal 2025 with an Annual Recurring Revenue of roughly 4 billion dollars, driven by a 20 percent year-over-year increase in monthly users and over 31 million paying subscribers. These figures illustrate that digital design tools are evolving into essential AI-powered operational platforms for global enterprises.

The strategic discussions took place on August 18, 2026, in Sydney, where Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul led a delegation of public and private sector representatives to visit Canva's headquarters. They met with key executives, including Cliff Obrecht, Co-founder and COO; Willix Halim, Head of Southeast Asia; and Pakapol Tangtongchin, Thailand Country Manager, to discuss local corporate registration and technology ecosystem expansion through the Thailand Board of Investment (BOI).

Pushing for a regional office and an AI-Design research center in Thailand demonstrates the government's strategic vision to transition the country from a technology consumer into a regional creator and developer. This initiative aims to attract high-skilled talent and foster deep-tech knowledge transfer to the Thai workforce over the long term.

For the business sector, the government is collaborating with the Department of Business Development (DBD) and the Digital Economy Promotion Agency (depa) to assist 40,000 Thai SMEs in upgrading product branding, packaging, and marketing campaigns. Furthermore, the initiative seeks to scale Thai designers in the Canva Creators program from 190 to 1,000 members by 2028, enabling local creators to earn direct revenue from a global user base.

"Today, the global economy is facing supply chain restructuring and geopolitical uncertainties. Thailand must therefore expand its economic partnerships, particularly with technology-strong nations like Australia."

In the education sector, the Ministry of Education is working alongside the Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) and the Office of the Private Education Commission (OPEC) to provide free access to Canva Education for teachers and students, targeting an increase from 3.3 million users to 6.6 million users by 2028 to build foundational digital and AI skills early.

While the regional office and research center proposals remain under review by Canva with the BOI acting as the primary coordinator, concrete collaborations targeting SMEs, designers, and education are already underway. According to the Creative Economy Agency (CEA), Thailand's 15 creative industries generate a total value of 1.44 trillion baht, accounting for 8.01% of GDP and employing nearly 1 million workers.
