Walmart Will Finally Start Supporting Tap to Pay

Shoppers who frequently find themselves instinctively pulling out their smartphones at checkout only to realize the card reader lacks NFC support will soon be able to breathe a sigh of relief. On Friday, retail giant Walmart officially announced that Tap to Pay is finally making its way to its stores and Sam's Club locations.
While this move simply brings the retailer up to speed with virtually every other major business, it marks a massive convenience upgrade. Alongside using preferred contactless methods via credit or debit cards, Walmart confirmed that customers will be able to add their Walmart, Sam's Club, or OnePay cards directly to their digital wallets.

According to the company's official announcement, the rollout kicks off on Monday, August 24, at select storefronts. If a local branch is not included in the initial phase, Walmart assures that every store across the United States will support the contactless payment method by the end of this year, followed by all gas stations by mid-2027.
The transition away from relying solely on proprietary payment methods like Walmart Pay reflects a broader shift toward meeting modern consumer preferences. Supporting standardized contactless payments eliminates checkout friction for millions of shoppers accustomed to digital wallets.
