One person has been killed following a violent sword attack at the Brinell School in Fagersta, located in central Sweden. Local authorities and emergency services rushed to the educational institution shortly after 14:00 local time on Friday in response to the emergency calls.
According to police updates, officers confronted the suspect and fired shots at him before successfully arresting and detaining the individual. Public broadcaster reports and local media indicated that the 18-year-old suspect wore a helmet during the attack and was believed to be a former student of the school. Police confirmed that there is currently no ongoing danger to the general public.
This incident highlights growing concerns over school safety in Sweden, which has witnessed several violent attacks on educational facilities in recent years. Following the country's worst-ever mass shooting at an adult education center in Örebro in 2025, which claimed 11 lives and prompted stricter gun control laws, security at schools like Brinell—which enrolls fewer than 500 students and sits 170km north-west of Stockholm—remains a critical public safety challenge.

In addition to the fatality, two teenage boys sustained serious injuries during the assault, while another individual suffered minor injuries. The severity of the incident prompted the Västmanland regional authorities to declare a state of high alert and temporarily order lockdowns at eight other schools in the vicinity, though those restrictions have since been lifted.

Investigators are now working diligently to determine the exact motives behind the attack. The violent episode unfolded just as students had returned to classrooms following the summer break, disrupting the start of the new academic term at the facility.
