The World Heritage Committee officially inscribed Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan during its 48th session held from 19–29 July 2026 in Busan, Republic of Korea, following recommendations by the International Council on Monuments and Sites. The property was recognised for its Outstanding Universal Value under criteria (ii) and (vi), operating as a core regional Buddhist centre since its establishment in the eighth century.

Architectural and religious practices from northeastern India, central Java, Sri Lanka, and the Mon region of southern Myanmar have integrated into the monastery's structures and rituals. These artistic expressions have exerted a lasting influence across Thailand and Southeast Asia for over 1,500 years, featuring enduring traditions such as the annual cloth-wrapping ceremony and the Nora dance drama.

The recognition of Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan as a World Heritage site serves as a vital catalyst for sustainable cultural tourism in Nakhon Si Thammarat. It elevates the province's global profile while reinforcing community-based conservation efforts to safeguard historical integrity for future generations.

Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor, stated that TAT will build on this recognition to position Nakhon Si Thammarat as a leading destination for living heritage, ensuring that faith, culture, and community remain central to the visitor experience through responsible tourism initiatives.
