Orange Cat Appreciation Day Sept 1: Origin and Traits

September 1 of every year is designated as Orange Cat Appreciation Day, aimed at raising public awareness about stray cats facing abandonment. Statistics indicate that ginger cats are frequently abandoned as the second most common group after black cats. This special day serves as more than just a chance to share cute pet photos online; it encourages responsible pet ownership and provides shelter animals a second chance at finding a permanent home.

The story began in 1997 when Chris Roy, an American software developer, discovered a stray orange cat near his home. He initially took it in for temporary care and named it Doobert. However, their growing bond prompted him to adopt the cat permanently. The pair spent 17 years together before Doobert passed away in 2014.

Following the loss of his beloved pet, Chris Roy designated September 1 as Orange Cat Appreciation Day to cherish Doobert's memory and encourage society to care for neglected animals. Furthermore, he developed a platform named Doobert to connect animal shelters, foster homes, and volunteers, currently collaborating with over 1,200 organizations across North America and engaging more than 27,000 volunteers.

From an owner's perspective, ginger cats are often viewed as playful, friendly, affectionate, and enthusiastic eaters. Surveys completed by cat owners indicate that orange cats score quite high in friendliness and trainability. Nonetheless, coat color alone does not dictate personality; actual behavior is also shaped by genetics, upbringing, environment, health, and individual life experiences.
