Architecture firm Tectoniques has revealed its design for a cultural center situated at the foot of Mont Ventoux in Vaison-la-Romaine, France. Occupying former vineyard land converted into a residential estate, the project adopts an inward-looking layout to navigate its fragmented peri-urban setting and lack of direct connection to public realms.
Drawing inspiration from cloisters, Roman domuses, and Provençal mas farmhouses, the building is set back from plot boundaries behind a planted forecourt. A strict geometric framework defines a 55-by-55-meter square perimeter enclosed by massive stone walls sourced locally from Vers-Pont-du-Gard. This heavy stone enclosure provides thermal mass and protection against the local mistral winds.

Inside the perimeter, Tectoniques Architectes divided the floor plan into three equivalent sections featuring timber-built wings flanking a central void. This central area serves as an internal landscape featuring a Mediterranean garden courtyard and a multi-sports pitch. A peripheral gallery supported by slender galvanized steel columns distributes circulation to the different wings, which accommodate the children's activity center, performance hall, and the music and dance school.
Three primary rooms stand out through distinct architectural volumes: the performance hall housed beneath a half-cylinder vault, and two four-sided pyramids that channel zenithal light into the dance studios. Instrumental practice rooms feature slightly inclined walls for acoustic optimization, complemented by sound-absorbing wall linings and integrated plywood furniture.
This project exemplifies modern hybrid construction by pairing heavy regional stone with high-performance timber framing. Such a material strategy balances embodied carbon considerations while leveraging passive design principles tailored specifically to the Mediterranean climate.
Environmental strategies rely on economy of means, utilizing local stone for thermal mass, shaded pergolas, and planted strips featuring jasmine, clematis, and honeysuckle. Through-plan ventilation, slatted timber night-cooling panels, and a geothermal system paired with underfloor heating and cooling complete the climate-responsive facility.
