The U.S. Department of Defense has significantly expanded its artificial intelligence capabilities by integrating custom versions of popular generative AI tools, ChatGPT Mil and Grok, into GenAI.mil, a centralized and secure portal launched last year that initially featured Google Gemini.
GenAI.mil is specifically designed to grant Department of Defense employees access to commercial frontier AI models without funneling sensitive government data through standard consumer channels. Notably, the official military version is exempt from the data collection practices typically inherent in consumer tech products.

Regarding adoption rates, the Department of Defense stated that the generative AI portal has proven highly successful, having already onboarded more than 1.7 million unique users out of the department's total 3 million personnel.
Derived from the OpenAI for Government program, ChatGPT Mil delivers an experience familiar to commercial ChatGPT users. According to the Defense Department, the platform centers around chat, files, projects, and custom GPTs, while also supporting document-heavy, routine unclassified tasks such as administrative duties, logistics, planning, and policy, with additional features slated for future rollout.
