  • Acer introduces the Project DualPlay Mini concept gaming handheld at IFA 2026
  • Features a unique flip-and-swivel screen design paired with a compact backlit keyboard
  • Powered by an Intel chip with a dual-fan cooling system using metal and plastic blades
  • Currently strictly a concept device with no official plans for a retail release

For the past few years, mobile PC gamers have faced a distinct choice: purchase a dedicated gaming laptop, or pick up one of the many Steam Deck-inspired handhelds that offer a fraction of the size but significantly less versatility. Acer’s latest concept device, the Project DualPlay Mini, attempts to upend that exact dichotomy by embedding a physical keyboard directly into a handheld gaming console.

The DualPlay Mini functions primarily as a Windows-driven gaming handheld, sharing its pedigree with Acer's existing Predator Atlas 8 lineup. In its default configuration, the 8-inch screen is flanked by analog sticks, a D-pad, Xbox-style ABXY face buttons, and two shoulder triggers. However, the device's standout flip-and-swivel design allows users to open the chassis and rotate the display around to align it with a compact, backlit mini keyboard.

While an 8-inch screen might not make the DualPlay Mini anyone's primary workstation unless paired with an external monitor, it could serve as a highly useful backup option for travelers, allowing them to pack a single versatile device instead of two. The ability to comfortably run keyboard-friendly PC games on a Steam Deck-sized form factor is a clear advantage for mobile enthusiasts.

Integrating a keyboard into a handheld gaming device highlights how manufacturers continue to experiment with form factors to bridge the gap between portable consoles and traditional laptops. While physical constraints often limit the usability of miniature keyboards for extended typing, concepts like the DualPlay Mini demonstrate creative engineering solutions for players who need casual productivity options on the go without carrying separate peripherals.

Because the Project DualPlay Mini remains strictly a concept with no current plans for a retail release, Acer has not disclosed detailed specifications regarding its internal hardware. The company confirmed that it is powered by an Intel processor and utilizes a dual-fan cooling layout similar to the Predator Atlas 8—combining one metal fan and one plastic fan, with the metal fan featuring thinner blades than previous iterations. A pair of USB-C ports are positioned on the rear, with one port supporting Thunderbolt connectivity.

The Verge news editor Dominic Preston noted that while it remains unclear if Acer will ever commercialize the DualPlay Mini design, he plans to check out all of Acer's new hardware announcements at IFA 2026 and hopes to get hands-on time with the device to evaluate its practical potential.
