German smart home company Tado has officially announced the launch of its second-generation Tado Smart Thermostat X at IFA 2026, positioning the device as a direct competitor to Google Nest and aiming to capture European users looking for an alternative after Google's exit from the regional thermostat market last year.
Christian Deilmann, co-founder and managing director of Tado, revealed in an interview that Google shutting down servers for its 1st- and 2nd-gen thermostats drove significant sales for the company. Although the third-generation Nest maintains a significantly higher penetration in Europe and remains supported, Deilmann anticipates that Google may eventually phase out support for other generations as well.
In terms of design, the new Smart Thermostat X features a completely revised white square aesthetic with a circular interface that illuminates only upon touch. Measuring 17.8mm thick, it is considerably slimmer than both Tado's first-generation model and Google's third-generation Nest, while offering a customizable top action button and a rechargeable battery lasting up to a year.

Engineered to work alongside boilers, heat pumps, and underfloor heating setups, the thermostat leverages Matter-over-Thread connectivity for reliable communication. Tado is also expanding line-wide features, including multi-home thermostat management under a single account and a TÜV-certified hydronic balancing system that qualifies users for government heat-pump subsidies in select regions.

Tado's adoption of the Matter-over-Thread standard represents a pivotal industry shift toward interoperability, helping consumers bypass proprietary ecosystem lock-ins. By timing this hardware rollout with Google's partial retreat from the European climate control market, Tado is aggressively capitalizing on displaced users seeking long-term smart home infrastructure.
Alongside the hardware launch, Tado introduced an energy savings promise, allowing customers to return all products within the first 12 months for a full refund if they feel insufficient energy costs were saved. The optional AI Assist subscription, priced at £3.99 per month, automates heating optimization based on local weather and residential thermal properties.
