Tyson Fury has launched a verbal attack on Anthony Joshua, calling his longtime rival a coward as the boxing world faces an anxious wait to see if their long-awaited heavyweight showdown will actually happen. The war of words highlights mounting frustrations behind the scenes as talks continue to drag on.
The fierce rivals had originally been projected to finally settle their differences inside the ring this November. However, the likelihood of that timeline holding together is steadily diminishing because both camps have failed to reach a concrete agreement over the host venue for the bout.
A potential clash between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua represents one of the most commercially lucrative matchups in modern heavyweight boxing. Venue disputes between domestic strongholds and lucrative international markets like the United States are common hurdles in mega-fights, often hinging on site fees, broadcast revenues, and promotional rights.
Two-time unified world champion Joshua, alongside his Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn, has already signed a contract stipulating that the fight must take place in the United Kingdom. Conversely, the event organisers are understood to be pushing heavily for the blockbuster event to be staged in the United States instead.
Eddie Hearn had previously warned that all existing contracts would need to be completely renegotiated from scratch if the fight were ultimately moved outside of the United Kingdom, adding another layer of complexity to an already tense negotiation process.
Speaking on Wednesday, Fury—who defeated journeyman Mariusz Wach just last month to keep his path toward the Joshua showdown clear—admitted that the ongoing negotiations are becoming quite tiring for everyone involved in the setup.
