Green Party leader Zack Polanski has officially confirmed his ambition to stand as a candidate in the upcoming by-election triggered by Sir Keir Starmer's resignation as a Member of Parliament. Polanski, currently a member of the London Assembly rather than an MP, stated that he feels exceptionally thrilled about the possibility of breaking ground as the very first Green MP representing the Holborn and St Pancras constituency.
The constituency has historically served as a robust stronghold for the Labour Party, but the Greens have set their sights firmly on capturing the seat. This strategic push comes after they finished closely behind Labour in the local elections earlier this year. Sir Keir announced his departure from the London constituency on Tuesday, arriving just two months after stepping down as prime minister, thereby setting up a fiercely contested electoral battle for his successor Andy Burnham.

Speaking to the Camden New Journal on Thursday morning, Polanski shared his deep personal connection to the neighbourhood where he has spent years living and working, expressing his profound affection for the area. He emphasized that the community encapsulates many unique attributes that define London's distinct charm.
"I have lived and worked in and around this community over many years, I know it well and I love it. It represents so many of the things that make London so special. I am so excited by the prospect of representing this place in Parliament."
To officially secure his spot as the Green candidate, Polanski must first win selection from local party members, a step his recent statements indicate is expected to proceed smoothly. Nevertheless, recent reports have highlighted emerging divisions among local Green activists. Some factions within the grassroots network reportedly favour a pro-Palestinian candidate or a pro-Gaza independent contender instead.
Sir Keir Starmer's decision to step down from parliament to concentrate on global affairs—spanning security, trade, and technology, alongside his ongoing advocacy against violence toward women—marks a significant political shift. For the Green Party, targeting a traditional Labour stronghold like Holborn and St Pancras highlights their urban growth strategy, though vote-splitting risks remain high if independent challengers enter the fray.
Further complicating the electoral landscape is the potential re-run candidacy of Andrew Feinstein, who finished as the independent runner-up behind Sir Keir during the 2024 general election, which could significantly fracture the opposition vote. An official date for the by-election has not yet been announced. Meanwhile, the Labour Party has not finalized its contender to defend the seat, with internal applications scheduled to close on Friday.
