Chatbots are designed to make you feel like your conversations are personal, agreeable, and overly friendly, simulating a chat with an online friend. In reality, however, they are far from private, especially if your definition of personal means for your eyes only.
Some Claude users can attest to that fact after a viral Reddit post highlighted how adding site:claude.ai/share to search queries allowed anyone to pull up real Claude chats directly in Google, indicating that search engines had indexed users' conversations.

According to Cyber Security News, the exposed transcripts ranged from lawyers discussing legal strategies and engineers talking through technical issues to users opening up about personal problems, ranging from mildly embarrassing to downright mortifying.
This security slip-up is part of a broader trend affecting AI platforms. Similar indexing issues happened to Claude back in September, and ChatGPT dealt with a comparable problem last August. It highlights the inherent privacy risks associated with chat-sharing features across the generative AI industry.
Fortunately, Anthropic quickly nipped the issue in the bud after the Reddit thread gained traction. Trying those search queries now simply yields a failed result, keeping future chats safe. Moreover, the glitch appeared to stem primarily from the share link feature rather than affecting all user accounts globally.
That said, during a similar incident back in September, at least one affected user denied ever using the share chat function, suggesting the possibility of other underlying vectors. Even if you are confident your chats were unaffected, remember that your conversations are routinely sent to Anthropic and used to train future models unless you explicitly opt out.
