- Perplexity users criticize sudden removal of core features and AI models
- Comet agentic browser moved behind a separate paid credit meter
- Subscribers argue that the 200-dollar monthly plan has lost its value
- Community feedback indicates consumer-tier plans are quietly being hollowed out
For an entire year, consumer AI complaints focused primarily on strict usage meters and fast-burning tokens. This week, however, consumer grievances shifted toward a more direct issue: paying for features that subsequently vanished. Browsers were paywalled, favorite models pulled, and billing discrepancies left users without promised credits. While the epicenter of this backlash centered on Perplexity, similar patterns surfaced across other platforms as well.
The most prominent grievance targeted Comet, Perplexity's agentic browser, which many subscribers cited as their main reason for joining. In an August 20 Reddit thread titled Comet Has Been Gutted, user ddd27ddd detailed the loss: the primary justification for switching to Perplexity was undermined now that users must rely on expensive credits to run the agentic browser, severely disrupting established workflows.

Alongside headline features, users noticed smaller, easily overlooked removals from the web version. On August 20, user sho-ne itemized several missing capabilities, noting that Perplexity no longer displays which underlying model answered a query, nor does it allow users to delete previous answers. These specific labels and controls matter greatly for multi-model tools, yet disappeared without official platform announcements.
Within the same discussion, user Powerful-Cheek-6677 calculated the diminishing returns aloud, pointing out that subscribers essentially pay 200 dollars for a basic search engine with limited monthly credits since nearly all advanced connectors shifted behind computer-based credit meters.
"I used to never run out of image generation credits. I can generate like 5 per week now. I used to daily GPT 5.5. They removed that. I switched to Gemini 3.1 pro thinking. They removed that… I really did love the product and the concept. This is not how you keep customers."

Frustration intensified AI-Insight: The Strategic Shift in AI Pricing Models
This wave of user dissatisfaction highlights a broader economic reality in the consumer AI sector. As infrastructure and inference costs mount, maintaining flat-rate pricing for power users becomes financially unsustainable. Tech companies increasingly pivot toward enterprise clients and usage-based monetization, often resulting in the quiet devaluation of consumer-tier subscriptions. While efficient for corporate margins, alienating early adopters through unannounced feature rollbacks risks severe backlash against platform trust.
What turned annoyance into active anger was the persistent prompting to adopt paid computer tools within an already active subscription. An August 22 thread by True-Collection-6262 garnered over a hundred upvotes, with commenter Early_Alternative211 highlighting how default placements function essentially as intrusive advertisements inside a paid product environment.
