2030 AI Economy: Anthropic Scenarios for Four Jobs

As artificial intelligence continues to advance rapidly, a critical question remains: should worker incomes rise alongside economic growth? A recent study from The Anthropic Institute titled Economic Scenarios for Transformative AI simulates the future of the US economy through 2030 by examining the granular task-level impacts across various occupations.
The study reveals that all three developmental pathways of AI remain nearly identical until 2027 before capabilities and real-world adoption diverge significantly. In the most intensive AI adoption scenario, the US economy could expand by 32.4% compared to a trajectory without AI, accompanied by a 15.4% acceleration in growth during the 12 months leading up to early 2030.

Using the US Department of Labor's O*NET database, the report illustrates how nursing tasks are reorganized: patient bathing remains human-centric, while discharge instructions and remote monitoring are accelerated by AI, and vital sign logging is fully automated. Consequently, nursing roles are restructured rather than eliminated, allowing more patient interaction time. Conversely, knowledge-based professions such as programmers and customer service representatives face declining demand, with 58% of surveyed Americans believing AI will manage software products as effectively as professionals by 2030.

While knowledge workers encounter downward wage pressures, manual trades such as electricians emerge as major beneficiaries. Accelerated infrastructure design drives an increase in construction projects, raising non-knowledge worker wages by up to 33.6% in the extreme scenario by 2030. Nevertheless, transitioning between distinct career paths remains challenging due to specialized skill requirements, creating gaps between labor demand and worker relocation speeds.
Anthropic's economic modeling highlights that AI progress impacts industries asymmetrically. The fundamental challenge ahead lies not merely in expanding aggregate GDP, but in managing income distribution and bridging potential disparities between capital owners and labor forces.
