Armenia is not a massive nation, nor is it exceptionally wealthy or globally renowned. Yet, it has emerged in international headlines not only as a consumer of AI applications but also due to political developments and supposed technological breakthroughs—specifically, rumors regarding the manufacturing of NVIDIA chips. Given the high-profile nature of NVIDIA, it is worth examining the actual situation closely.
First and foremost, reports circulated suggesting that NVIDIA was somehow manufacturing chips inside Armenia. However, important clarifications must be made. Armenia is not turning into a chip fabrication nation in the manner of Taiwan. NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs are not rolling off assembly lines in Hrazdan or Yerevan; NVIDIA points out that Blackwell chips rely on a custom TSMC 4NP process, cementing core semiconductor production firmly within the existing global supply chain rather than inside Armenian borders.
Instead, Armenia is pursuing a different ambition: establishing itself as a regional AI compute hub, powered by imported high-end NVIDIA hardware, U.S.-cleared chip transfers, local telecom and energy resources, and a growing recognition that smaller nations require sovereign access to artificial intelligence computing capabilities.
