The Manchester derby sparked immediate controversy as Phil Foden was given his marching orders following a straight red card challenge against Bruno Fernandes.
Following a relatively quiet start to the fixture, the Manchester City midfielder was dismissed by referee Michael Oliver after 23 minutes of play at Old Trafford.
Foden, 26, made history of an unwanted kind by becoming just the second City player to be sent off in a Premier League Manchester derby, following Bernardo Corradi's dismissal back in December 2006.

Midway through the first half, Foden gathered the ball on the right flank before being closed down and tripped by Fernandes. While on the ground, Foden lashed out with his foot toward the Portuguese midfielder, prompting the referee to produce a straight red card.
Replays indicated that Fernandes may have caught Foden in the back prior to Foden's retaliation. The video assistant referee reviewed the passage of play and confirmed the original decision made on the pitch, while Fernandes escaped without receiving a booking.
"Bruno kicked Foden first, but that's not a red for him. But then Foden did kick out at him and if you kick upwards, you are going to get a red."
