Formula 1 2027: 10 sprint races including historic Monaco debut

Formula 1 has officially announced a major expansion of its race calendar for 2027, boosting the total number of sprint events from six to ten. The move aims to deliver heightened competitive action and drama across every single day of a race weekend.

Sprint events feature a shortened race on Saturdays accompanied by an extra qualifying session on Fridays. For the 2027 championship, sprint races will be introduced for the very first time in Bahrain, Australia, Japan, Monaco, and Abu Dhabi.

The remaining sprint rounds will take place in Canada, Britain, Italy, Brazil, and Qatar. Event organizers continue to favor the format due to high ticket demand, as competitive sessions take place across all three days rather than just Saturday and Sunday. Silverstone credited hosting a sprint event for achieving its highest attendance ever, drawing 64,000 more fans over four days compared to the previous non-sprint year.

The decision to include Monaco in the sprint schedule has sparked discussion, given the historic street circuit's reputation for making overtaking nearly impossible. However, F1 emphasizes that the format guarantees two distinct qualifying sessions on the demanding track, creating varying grid orders and adding unpredictability.
